Deviated septum surgery. Afrin works only. Why can't I just stop the day before surgery? Is the day before OK?

Please heed your surgeon's instructions.  Medications like Afrin work by constricting blood vessels - choking the same vessels that provide blood supply to the tissues being operated on.  Cartilage and soft tissues can have prolonged healing or even die if they are jeopardized.  This is the same effect that happens with drugs like cocaine and nicotine.  Please avoid Afrin prior to surgery and never use for longer than 72 hours in a continuous span.Good luck with your surgery.

  It is Important to be off of afrin prior to a septoplasty surgery. usual have a much more difficult postoperative course  if you are hooked on Afrin nasal spray before surgery.
