Will the dark, rough matrix-like tiny dots I got after Non-Ablative Fractional Laser fade? 1 week post op.

Question

I had non-ablative fractional laser done on my abdomen for stretch marks about a week ago. Initially it was red and inflamed, then about 3 days later it was no longer inflamed but it turned into tiny dark pinpoints all over. The area is still a little sore, so it is clearly still healing. I just want to make sure this is a normal part of the recovery and that these matrix-like dots will fade, because I assumed there was no downtime. They do feel rough, so perhaps they are tiny dots of scabs.

This is difficult to answer without pictures. These may fade some with time, but a combination approach is usually needed to improve hyperpigmentation. Dark spots can be improved with a combination of lasers, Aerolase, microneedling/prp, skin lightening, peels, and skin care. Sun protection is essential. It sounds like you are experiencing normal healing following fractional nonablative laser treatment. The post procedure skin care regimen is very important. Discuss this with your doctor.

These dots on your abdomen will flake off on its own. Don't scratch or exfoliate because you may scar. It could take about a week for the dots to come off. Moisturizing the area will help soothe the area.

The black dots are most likely sealed off blood vessels, and will go away with time. I'm sorry, but I've never heard of using laser resurfacing for stretch marks, and would be very surprised if this would give any improvement.

Yes, this is called fractional matrix, and is seen in everyone. Some takes a few days to heal, others a little longer. In fact I had a CO2 done on my skin type on my face, and its still healing at week 3! This is a normal part of the healing process and the time it takes depends on the location, laser settings, and most importantly skin type. Darker your are, the more likely the colour changes. It sounds as though you are recovering nicely and typically.  The redness and swelling has subsided and now you see the dark spots or pixels as the "scab" developed.  The next thing that will occur over two to three weeks is shedding of the pixels as the skin continues to heal and remodel.  Do not pick the brown dots off prematurely, let them fall off.  Skin on the abdomen takes about three to four times longer than the face to heal.  Understand that further treatments and follow up with your doctor will be necessary for the best results.  All the Best to you.  Alexis Parker MD

The tiny, dark, rough matrix-like tiny dots will flake off and eventually go away. Try to refrain from exfoliating the skin in this area or using harsh soaps, etc. Moisturize as much as possible as this will help with healing. It could take anywhere from 7 to 14 days for these dark spots to diminish. Refrain from any rough manipulation to the area as you could experience scarring.
