Kybella: After Care for Best Results

Kybella is administered as an injection into the fat tissue in the submental area (under chin). Multiple injections are required with each treatment. Total treatment time will take about 20 minutes. There may be some mild discomfort during the injections. In our practice,  we use ice to numb the area along with a topical numbing cream before the treatment and after the treatment we suggest adequate hydration equivalent to approximately half body weight in ounces to improve lymphatic circulation.

After a Kybella treatment, does drinking water help remove the fat more quickly?

The dead fat, located in the "hard lump(s)", needs to be ingested by your immune system's macrophage cells and mobilized to enter the blood stream before being eliminated via the kidneys.  Staying hydrated will help to keep these big eater cells in circulation, but drinking more water will not help you to remove the fat more quickly.

Having performed many of these deoxycholate injections into fat over the past TEN YEARS, I have researched what might help a person get rid of the dead fat faster.  Theoretically, something that increases the macrophage activity should help.  Beta-D-Glucan is such a product.  An article in the Journal of Neutriceuticals that was from research in Univ. of Louisville, KY, showed that an over-the-counter brand from manufacturer Transfer Point of South Carolina had a particularly excellent brand.  Please understand that I am not saying this will work...and there has not been any studies on its effectiveness used in conjunction with Kybella to my knowledge....but theoretically, it may hasten the ridding of the dead fat from the body.

Water Does Not Flush Fat After Kybella

Drinking water is a terrific way of keeping yourself and your skin hydrated. However, upping your intake of water will not help eliminate fat from your body after Kybella treatment. It takes about 6 to 8 weeks before your final results are visible. Please see a board-certified dermatologist to talk about how to use Kybella to treat a double chin.

What to Expect after Kybella Treatments

Bruising, swelling and mild discomfort can be expected following your Kybella treatment. These issues should resolve within 72 hours. You might be  asked to avoid exercising during this time and to avoid strenous exercise for the week following Kybella injections.  This is just a precautionary measure to reduce overall bruising and swelling.  Proper diet and hydration also help to enhance skin healing in general.

Kybella and drinking water

Kybella is a fantastic injection for reducing the double chin.  However, there is no evidence that drinking water or anything else would help speed up the injection.  Best, Dr. Green

Good hydration is always important and recommended after any procedure. However, there are no studies to verify that fat cells will clear more quickly because of it.

Kybella is an FDA approved injectable to reduce the fullness beneath the chin. Swelling and firmness are very common. These are typical side effects and are actually the desired results because they are temporary and the product is in the area and working well. This represents an inflammatory process and drinking water will help to speed the recovery.

No Evidence to Suggest That Drinking Water Affects Kybella Treatment

Swelling and "hardness" are very common temporary side effects following treatment with Kybella.  While drinking plenty of water is healthy for your body overall, the amount of water that one drinks has no known effect on reducing the severity or duration of the local, mild side effects that typically occur following Kybella treatment.

After a Kybella treatment, does drinking water help remove the fat more quickly?

There have been no studies performed that will support that theory, but is not a bad idea.

After a Kybella treatment, does drinking water help remove the fat more quickly?

It is always a good idea to stay hydrated. There is no proof that drinking more water will help clear the fat more quickly. Good luck!
