Hello, and thank you for your question regarding whether a panniculectomy or a tummy tuck would be better for you following a hernia mesh repair four years ago. Based on your height and weight, you likely have excess skin and fat in the lower abdomen, and the best procedure for you will depend on your specific goals and concerns.A panniculectomy is a functional procedure designed to remove hanging skin and fat from the lower abdomen. This procedure does not include muscle repair (rectus abdominis plication) or repositioning the belly button. If your main concern is eliminating excess skin below the belly button that causes discomfort, irritation, or hygiene issues, then a panniculectomy alone may be sufficient.A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), on the other hand, provides more comprehensive contouring. In addition to removing excess skin and fat, a tummy tuck tightens the abdominal muscles that may have been stretched due to weight gain, pregnancy, or previous surgeries. Since you had hernia mesh repair, it is important to determine whether your abdominal muscles were weakened or separated. If your abdominal wall is still compromised, a tummy tuck with muscle repair may offer a better long-term aesthetic and functional outcome. If you are considering aesthetic improvement along with skin removal, a tummy tuck would be the better choice. However, if you are primarily seeking the removal of hanging skin without muscle tightening, a panniculectomy might be more appropriate. Consulting with an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluate the strength of your abdominal wall and assess how the previous hernia repair and mesh placement impact your options is crucial.I hope this helps clarify the differences between a panniculectomy and a tummy tuck in your case. Best of luck with your decision!Sincerely,Dr. J. Timothy Katzen, MD, MBA, FACS, FICS
An in person evaluation or photos are needed to give a recommendation. You can still have a tummy tuck in many cases even with a prior hernia repair. If you are intending to lose weight it is better to first accomplish that goal before considering surgery. A panniculectomy will only remove loose, hanging skin. A tummy tuck is much more comprehensive and will remove excess subcutaneous fat and skin as well as correct abdominal wall laxity.
Thank you for your question. Based on your description, it seems like you are seeking a tummy tuck rather than just a panniculectomy. A panniculectomy removes excess skin from the lower abdomen (the "apron"), while a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) also includes muscle repair to address abdominal...
While you do appear to have a bit of overhanging skin/fat, a panniculectomy may not be warranted. A full tummy tuck may be more suitable for you. However, this would only remove the fat that’s subcutaneous and not deeper (visceral). For this reason, it may be a good idea to consider losing s...
Hello AmyFL5, thank you for your question about options besides invasive surgery to improve your stomach area. Thank you for your pictures and history. The elasticity of your skin is multi-variable. The ability of your skin to recoil depends on your genetics, history of weight gain and loss,...
