Dear cench28Thanks for the question. If it would do, so everybody should have hair loss. Nowadays everybody has a TV or smartphone. The answer is "no" it does not effect your hair transplantation. I wish you all the best.
Some doctors may recommend vitamins, biotin, minoxidil etc. But these are generic recommendations. For hair loss related to radiation treatment, only time will tell.
Both temporary and permanent hair loss can occur after radiation therapy, depending on the amount of scalp affected. You'll know within 6-8 months whether the affected areas will be permanent or temporary as most regrowth will have occurred again by 6-8 months. What are the options?a) If the area is small, hair transplants work very well and we've transplanted many patients with radiation induced hair loss. b) scalp micropigmentationc) low level laser therapy and topical minoxidil. It's not clear when best to use these therapies, but likely within the immediate period after radiation to stimulate injured follicles. That's the only period that it will likely be useful. Studies are needed but I advise use of minoxidil after redness (from the radiation) has settled. Individuals considering minoxidil or low level laser should check with their oncologist for confirmation.REFERENCES:1) Radiation- and chemotherapy-induced permanent alopecia: case series.Haider M, Hamadah I, Almutawa A.J Cutan Med Surg. 2013 Jan-Feb;17(1):55- 2) Hair transplantation in alopecia due to radiation.Nordström RE, Holsti LR.Plast Reconstr Surg. 1983 Oct;72(4):454-8.
After radiation treatment, if you have hair loss, I generally recommend for you to wait a full year. If you still do not grow out your hair by then, or while you are waiting, the use of topical minoxidil can be effective at stimulating hair and that will take about a year to see the full benefits, about the time any hair that was not killed off from the radiation starts to grow. For men with radiation and significant hair loss, we recommend the use of Scalpmicropigmentation (SMP) which can radically change the look of the man. If there is an significant residual hair, the use of SMP below the hair can make it look much fuller and this is very effective if there is any significant amount of hair. For men, the idea that they can shave their head and develop a bold look of a shaved head is shown nicely on the videos on the website below. The results from shaving the head will make you look like you have a full head of normal hair (shaved). At a recent medical meeting where I brought a patient with me and discussed him with over 600 doctors, his condition of Alopecia Totalis (no hair any place on his body) could not be detected as he showed off his normal looking 'shaved head of hair" or at least the illusion of it. Not one doctor in the audience who met the patient during the coffee break, could tell he did not have a shaved head of hair.
Hair loss can be devastating at a young age. Before you can consider a treatment plan, you need an exam by a doctor. In other words, you need a diagnosis before exploring treatment options.
