Hi Diane. IPL is a broad spectrum of light, meaning many different wavelengths. Different wavelengths of light have different targets in the skin. Whereas lasers are one wavelength only, IPL has many and we can pick the wavelength we want to treat the condition we have.Light that gets rid of hair (ideally in the 755-810 nanometer wavelength) is different than light that is used to treat brown spots (approximately 532) so when a practitioner treats you with an IPL for different conditions, they will likely use "filters" that remove all light except the wavelength we want for that particular condition. So, the short answer to your question is that even though IPL is one device, it has different types of light that are used for different skin conditions. As an aside, IPL is not a great option for wrinkles. It may work well for redness, small veins, brown spots and hair removal, but it will not help a lot with wrinkles. For that you would want a laser (Erbium and CO2 are two common types) or injection products (Botox, dermal fillers). In addition, a diode or alexandrite laser will perform better for permanent hair removal than an IPL. IPL is best for sun damage or small veins. Good luck.
