I got septoplasty surgery 2 weeks ago. I got no brusing and minimum swelling. My doctor also did shave down my hump at the same time. My nose looks worse than it did on my side. It´s big and got no shape. No tip work was done. My doctor don't see anything unusual and is happy with the result. Please I am so desperate. Is this the look I will have or will it get better. Do I need a rhinoplasty?
Answer: Changes in nasal appearance after septoplasty It's a little difficult to comment on what changes may have occurred to your nose during surgery without a before picture to compare it to. Was your surgery performed through an open approach? If so, it's normal to have quite a bit of swelling 2 weeks after surgery. On your lateral photos, it appears the tip projection is lacking relative to the height of your bridge to achieve a straight profile. The nose will continue to change in shape as it heals and the swelling resolves though, so give it a year before you come to a final conclusion about it. It's also important to follow up closely with your surgeon this year as you heal.

Answer: SEPTOPLASTY does not change the appearance of the outside of the nose, RHINOPLASTY does. Septoplasty changes only the inside of the nose (with the caveat that sometime the base of the nose is straightened if it is crooked from a deviated septum). Any changes to the outside of the nose to improve appearance is a rhinoplasty. So it sounds like you had a septoplasty and very limited rhinoplasty. While two weeks is too soon to judge the results of rhinoplasty (your hump reduction), and I/m sure that you still have residual swelling at this point, it is possible that you may consider a revision of your limited rhinoplasty in the future to balance the nose a bit more. I would recommend waiting at least 3-6 months to judge your final results, and discuss any additional changes with your surgeon.

Answer: Nose getting bigger 2 weeks is too early to decide whether a revision is necessary. The swelling of the nasal supratip area can persist for months. You will also see that there are days that the swelling is better and days that are worse until you are done healing. Give it 6 months to a year before you decide to have anything else done. Best Wishes.

Answer: Septoplasty recovery Dear Siggatun, In your opening question you ask, How can this happen with Septoplasty? It would not. You actually had a septorhinoplasty of sorts the "septo" portion which is the functional aspect of the nasal surgery and the "rhinoplasty" portion is the reducing of the hump or other cosmetic changes that were made. During this procedure it is important to take all of the aesthetics of the nose into consideration not just the hump. Small alterations need to be made so that the the nose is both functional and aesthetically pleasing in the end. With that said two weeks is to soon to determine what your final result will be. You will need to wait at least a few months and then see your surgeon for further discussion. Best regards, Michael V. Elam, M.D.
