I have done many many septoplasties and the one common complaint, is congestion after the surgery.
The most common reason for this, is simple post surgery swelling. In 2009 there was a study published that looked at patient comfort and the use of a nasal decongestant. They basically showed that, using a decongestant didn't improve symptoms but also wasn't harmfull. However, people who used the decongestant reported higher pain levels! So its a tough situation. An oral decongestant will likely result in more drying and crusting so I would avoid it.
One option I recommend to people, is to use a gentle nasal salt water irrigation. this will help remove all the nasty buildup from your surgery and the mucus and is non-irritating to your healing nasal mucosa (skin).
What I would also ensure, if it is not allergy season for you. If you also have itchy, watery eyes, then a non-sedating allergy medication may be better.
Regardless my best advice, is to talk to your surgeon before you do anything as I do now know the exact nature of your surgery. I am sure they will be about to help out a lot.
Hope this helps a little.
