Why is the compression garment making the swelling worse when it is suppose to help reduce it?

Question

I had chin laser lipo on Monday morning & have to wear the garment for 2weeks. I've been wearing it as requested, however I took it off for a couple hours on Friday to go for a meal. When I got home, the swelling had gone right down but regardless, I put the garment on & went to bed. When I woke, I'd really swollen up again. I kept it on all day & was still swollen so decided to put it to the test & took it off to sleep. Upon waking, the swelling had gone right down again! Why is this happening?

The compression garment is important to wear
because it will control any swelling that occurs after the procedure. You tend
to swell more a few days post procedure, this is normal. In order to control
swelling wear the compression garment and you will start to see a contour in
your body’s shape.

Swelling can be exacerbated by compression around the face. Best to ask your surgeon if he wantws you to wear it.

it's not unusual for the area above the strap and just below it to show increased swelling when wearing the strap.  The strap is to keep swelling away in the area treated but it causes swelling in the tissues surrounding the untreated area.  This may not make good sense to you but it is important because keeping the treated area compressed not only keeps fluid and swelling out but allows the overlying skin to heal or attach to the underlying tissues.  This is important for your result and proper contouring.  If you swell up with the strap you could possibly take brief breaks but you really need to discuss this with your surgeon.Chase Lay, MDdouble Board certified facial plastic surgeon
