8 years ago I had a DIEP flap beast reconstruction. In the last year or so I have had itching deep under the scar line.

Your problem is unlikely an infection.  An infection would show signs of redness that might spread to the surrounding skin, open wounds, or drainage of pus.  If you have non-absorbable stitches, then it is possible that they are trying to work their way out of the incision, especially after 8 years.  The human body always tries to get rid of things that aren't "you".  If you are seeing the stitches just below the skin, you should go see your surgeon and find out if he or she can simply remove them.  At this point you do not need them, your incisions are completely healed!The nerves are not growing back at 8 years after your surgery.  Nerves will regenerate up to 12-18 months after the surgery, so this is not the problem.Sometimes a scar can simply be itchy or painful for a long period of time.  This is not uncommon and I often see patients with bothersome scars from all types of surgeries.  Treatment for this could be a steroid injection, and often times the scar needs to be cut out and the incision closed back up again.  Call your surgeon and make an appointment and tell him or her your concerns and see what options they give.  I hope this helps!  Best of luck!
