I gave birth to twins years ago & I'm now in need of a tummy tuck. I have loose skin, diastasis-recti, & two epigastric hernias in my upper abdominal area around 2 inches wide (I had an umbilical hernia repaired in the past & I just recently found out about the other 2). I know that if I went ahead & had the hernias repaired without having a tt, it's possible they could reoccur because I have no support from my muscles. Can I find a surgeon that can do this for me? Is it too difficult to do?

Answer: Epigastric hernias and a tummy tuck? Epigastric hernias are frequently repaired in conjunction with a tummy tuck. A physical exam would be necessary to determine the extent of the hernias and whether your plastic surgeon would be comfortable correcting them or whether they should be repaired by a general surgeon at the time the plastic surgeon performs the tummy tuck.Keep in mind that following the advice from a surgeon on this or any other website who proposes to tell you what to do without examining you, physically feeling the tissue, assessing your desired outcome, taking a full medical history, and discussing the pros and cons of each operative procedure would not be in your best interest. I would suggest you find a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and ideally a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) that you trust and are comfortable with. You should discuss your concerns with that surgeon in person and follow his or her advice.Robert Singer, MD FACSLa Jolla, California

Answer: Tummy tuck with hernia repair Thank you for your question. If you have a true hernia, then it would make sense to haves it repaired at the same time. The scarring would be less, the repair of the hernia would be easier and there would be cost savings on OR and Anesthesia Time. I would recommend you consult with a board certified plastic surgeon who performs TT regularly.
