Minoxidil on donor area from the beard? (Photo)

Question

I have done my hair transplant 5 months ago. The doctor used my beard as a donor area and this part now has less density than the rest of the beard and it is not improving (shock-loss or over-harvested?). The representative of the clinic suggested me to use Minoxidil Rogaine 5 mg to get the hair back but I don't like what I read about its side-effects and the need to use it for a life-time! Do you think Minoxidil can be an effective solution to my problem? is it worth taking the risk in my case?

Hello thank you for your question! Beard hair is generally used as a second additional donor source when the scalp is insufficient to supply the required amount of coverage particularly within the crown or mid-scalp area. Hair follicles extracted from the beard area does not grow back again, for this reason unfortunately neither minoxidil nor any other kind of treatment option will grow the hair back in this region.

Hello, good question.  It seems as though you have been misinformed regarding Minoxidil. You can use Minoxidil forever but unfortunately the hair from that area will never grow back. You might want to get a second opinion from a different source if you require further exams or visits. Good luck to you.

If the hair follicles have been removed, or damaged beyond growth then no treatment is going to help. They are either no longer there or the hair follicle is damaged and either miniaturised or will no longer grow hairs. Depending on your skin quality, if this is a concern to you. You may wish to look at a cream to help healing of your skin. But I am afraid in respect of promoting hair growth it´s not possible if there is no longer any hair.

It is clear from the picture that the area you’re concerned about is where the extraction/excision took place. Unfortunately, I don’t think this will improve with minoxidil. The scarring might improve with time and mature a bit more, but the empty spots will remain.

It is common to use the beard under the chin as a donor area when the scalp is not available. The hair taken from this area will not return even with minoxidil.
