IPL or Picolaser for pigmentation spot on temple? (Photo)

Hello, I am 34 years old, half Filipina and half German and have a pigment spot on my temple. I am skin type III and tend to have spots and freckles. I went for a consultation regarding the pigmentation mark. The doctor does pico treatments which are best for my skin type according to internet research. However, she advised me not to have laser treatment as she doesn't think the results are predictable. She says that the spot could also become permanently darker. I also went to another dermatologist who told me that he should perform an OPL treatment on me. The spot would not get darker, but in the worst case would stay that way. However, I read on the internet that IPL/OPL are not good options for my skin type. Should I try a chemical peel instead or what is your advice? Thank you very much!

You might wish to consider the use of a series of superficial peels, such as high concentrations of glycolic acid or salicylic acid, Jessner's Solution or low concentrations of TCA to the spot. Superficial peels carry generally carry less of risk for post-treatment dyspigmentation than media depth peels or lightbased therapies. Hope this helps and best of luck. I agree with you that IPL would absolutely not be a good option for your skin as more melanin can cause a higher risk of burns. Pico is a great option for your skin tone as it is a non-thermal choice. I'd even recommend chemical peels with this as a treatment plan to reduce hyperpigmentation. There is also at home options that you can do as well such as skincare ingredients. Ingredients that focus on reducing hyperpigmentation include: Niacinamide (between 2-5%), Tranexamic Acid and retinoids.

Niacinamide will calm inflammation which will reduce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Tranexamic acid reduces melanin production which helps individuals struggling with melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Finally are retinoids - topical vitamin A, helps with increasing cell turnover.

I'd recommend using a combination of skincare ingredients along with the help of the Pico laser and/or chemical peels to ensure the best outcome of reducing hyperpigmentation.
