Level of intensity

Question

I am a 45 year old white female considering IPL for some facial issues. I have had IPL hair removal in the past. I am curious if the same intensity IPL that is used on the face and neck areas as the intensity for hair removal?

Hello! I'm Landry - an aesthetician from Shah Aesthetics in both the Chicago and Winnetka areas. The IPL we use at our practice is called Lumecca, part of the 3 in 1 InMode Optimas device. While IPL does temporarily reduce hair growth, I would personally not use IPL for the sole purpose of hair reduction. I would think of IPL as having the added benefit of hair reduction with the prominent results being skin rejuvenation.

I would use the 515 nm handpiece with a fluence between 8-12 J/cm2 for pigmentation concerns or 12-16 J/cm2 for vascular concerns. This feels more like a sharp blast of heat instead of Diolaze which feels like a rubber band snap. The bright light from the Lumecca firing is typically more startling to patients than anything.

My recommendation is that if you can tolerate laser hair removal well then you would be a good candidate for IPL.

Hello, and thank you for your question! The level of intensity will be different for hair removal because, the laser for hair removal is targeting the follicle whereas the ipl is targeting surface pigmentation and vascular in the skin.
