I've asked my dentist to refer me to someone who could potentially even them out, but he states it's unnecessary and I would be wasting my time going to an orthodontist.

Answer: Cosmetic recountoring Hi: You are definitley a canidate for cosmetic recountoring. You can even the lenght of the two front teeth by having your dentist slightly shave the enamel until the front teeth are slightly longer than the surrounding teeth.
