Would or could you be given a blood thinner in order to advoid a fatty embolism is that even an option and are there travel precautions you should be wary of because of the degree of lipo done? For example if you are traveling out of the country for the procedure and need to return home?
Answer: Fat embolism, blood clots Fat embolism is a very rare phenomenon. It can occur but it very rare. Actual pieces of fat to enter the blood vessels is rare. There is another entity called Fat Embolism Syndrome which can cause breathing dysfunction but that is also rare.Blood clots are more common. Blood thinners in the form of heparin or low molecular weight heparin can be given during the peri-operative and post-operative period to patients at risk to help prevent blood clots. The best way to prevent a blood clot however is early walking immediately after surgery. There are certain measures and test to be done pre-operatively to minimize the risk and there also measures to take during surgery and after surgery to minimize the risks. In general a BBL operation is a low risk procedure for blood clots. An abdominoplasty for example is a higher risk operation.

Answer: If you have 360 “aggressive” lipo and a BBL can you be given a blood thinner to avoid an embolism? Will this effect travel? Thank you for your questions. The only piece of advice I can give you is to cancel your travel plans and do not put your life at risk due to surgical tourism. Have your surgery done by a local plastic surgeon who is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This will assure that you are getting the best care in the safest of environments.

Answer: If you have 360 “aggressive” lipo and a BBL can you be given a blood thinner to avoid an embolism? Will this effect travel? Thank you for your question. A blood thinner is not routinely given prior or after liposuction with BBL. Fat embolisms are not prevented by blood thinners. Blood thinners can prevent blot clot formation which can travel to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism. This is lethal in 10% of the people who get a PE. Fat embolism is caused during surgery by inadvertent injection into the inferior gluteal vein when it is entered or torn by the cannula. This is a technical issue with injection deep into the gluteal muscle. If you travel out of the country for this type of surgery, you can get a blood clot up to 30 days post surgery. Would not recommend a long plane ride, since you are bent at the hips and knees which slows down blood flow in the veins.Discuss these issues with your chosen surgeon. Good luck.
