Will getting on Accutane for acne trigger genital herpes outbreak (hsv 2)?

Thanks for your question.  It is a very valid concern, but fortunately in my many years of treating acne patients with accutane, I have not seen this problem develop, even in folks with a strong history of genital herpes.   One option is to discuss the concern with your dermatologist and have a prescription of Valtrex or acyclovir on hand so you can immediately start treating if you notice a breakout of herpes starting.  It is fine to take both medications at the same time if you need to do so.  If you need the accutane for your acne, please do consider it, as it can really make a wonderful difference in your skin with little risk of a genital herpes outbreak.  See an expert and best of luck!
