I am considering having C02 laser resurfacing on my face. I am a redhead with fair skin, age 68 and prone to having cold sores/fever blisters. What can I do to help this not happen after my procedure.

Hi! You can have your doc pre treat / pre prescribe cold sore meds before fillers / lasers. It helps a ton and is very commonly done in prevention.

If you are prone to cold sores, we can absolutely treat you safely while avoiding cold sores with the CO2 laser! If you are going to a medical spa overseen by an MD, they should be able to fill a Valdez prescription for you. You will take the medication as directed leading up to the treatments, during, and after!

If you’re prone to cold sores, that’s definitely something to plan for before CO2 laser, since the treatment can trigger an outbreak.

This is usually managed by prescribing an antiviral medication to start a day or two before the procedure and continuing for several days after, which helps reduce the risk significantly.

Make sure you let your provider know your history ahead of time so they can plan appropriately and prescribe it if needed.

Talk with your surgeon about your concerns. It would be best to start acyclovir or valacyclovir prior to laser resurfacing to avoid it causing a flare. These medications are very effective if started prior to treatment and continued after.
