Slight gummy smile when smiling - What would be the best procedure for this? (photos)

Question

Hey So when I smile you can slightly see my gums. What would be the best procedure for this? Botox or a little lip filler? I like my smile so don’t want to change how I smile just so that you can see less gum. Opinions please on best treatment?

Thank you for providing photos along with your question. The most common cause of a gummy smile is overactive muscles in the upper lip. Botox can relax these muscles and limit the rise of the upper lip when you smile.

Botox can be injected to weaken the muscles that pull down the corners of the mouth, which in turn allows the corners of the lips to rise and it will change the beautiful smile you have now. To fix a gummy smile, use dermal fillers or lip fillers. By injecting your lips with a dermal filler, we can plump up your upper lips and reduce the amount of gum shown. Lip fillers increase the volume of their lips. If you have a gummy smile, we can use this method to thicken your lips and enhance the symmetry of your lip to reduce ‘gumminess’. The lip filler injection usually takes about ten minutes and can last between six months to a year. You might experience some swelling within the first 24 hours but it usually settles very quickly.

For gummy smile, treatment with botox/neurotoxin would relax slightly the muscles that elevate the upper lip, leading to less gum exposed during smiling. The risk of this would be an assymmetric smile. 
Lip fillers would increase the volume of the lip, leading to a more feminine appearance and also less gum being exposed during smiling.

Botox can be used to lessen the appearance of a gummy smile and lasts approximately three to four months.  Based on your photos only a conservative treatment is needed for correction.  Be sure to visit with an experienced injector.

However, if the show of the gumline is something that bothers you a great deal, you can always have a small procedure, using Botox, injected into the upper lip, where it creates what is called a lip flip affect, allowing the lip to sit lower while covering the gumline. A few strategically placed units of a neuromodulator such as Botox would help lower your upper lip to correct the small amount of gingival exposure. Please note that the placement here is critically important as the frontal portion of your smile is actually very well positioned while the rear aspect of your gums are more exposed. Overtrearment, especially in the frontal (anterior) aspect, will result in a distortion. The great thing about this procedure is that the results are usually very satisfactory and you have the security of a temporary fix. Best of luck to you!
