Lip Filler for Cleft Lip? What would give me a natural appearance? (Photos)

Question

I am 18 and was born with a bilateral cleft lip. Whilst the doctors did a brilliant job reconstructing my lip shape, my bottom lip is much more voluminous than my my top one. My top one kind of sits flat on my face. Could I benefit from getting filler in the top lip to even them out, and if so how much/ what type would you recommend for a natural appearance? Thanks!

I perform a lot of lip injections with fillers such as juvederm and it works great. Many times I need to put more in one side than the other to attempt to even out the vermillion border (The red line of the lip). This helps provide more symmetry at times.For patients looking for a more long lasting result, I recommend fat grafting. That is, using your own bodies fat to make your lips naturally look more shapely. The bonus is that the results last many many years.
In general, I avoid using permanent prosthesis because I find that the lips are such dynamic and sensitive structures, the end result is not natural.

Thank you for your question! Lip filler is an effective way to add volume and correct any unevenness in the lips, so it could potentially be a good option for you. That said, any internal scar tissue that you have from your surgery may prevent lip filler from delivering an ideal result, so be sure to see a quality provider that can assess you thoroughly and determine the best treatment for your needs. I think trying fillers is definitely a good idea. Scar tissue may restrict how much does central upper lip projects but give it a try. You can always have the provider inject a small amount look in the mirror and then have them continue adding more filler until you think it looks right.

Hi and welcome to our forum!From your photos, I note the lack of maxillary projection and the relative short upper lip which is common after bilateral cleft repair as there is the lack of natural tissue due to the cleft. In addition, your lower lip appears relatively large. Filler may add volume to the upper lip, but due to the lack of cupid's bow and the presence of internal lip scarring, it may not achieve total normalcy. A lower lip trim may also improve appearance. Visit a board certified plastic surgeon with cleft lip injecting experience.Best wishes...
