The answer to your question depends on several factors, including how your breasts are at the moment and what you hope your results will be. For example, if you want significantly more cleavage but your breasts are naturally spaced far apart, you may not get as much cleavage as you’d like. If your nipples are located below your breast fold, then breast implants alone will probably not give you as much projection as you’d like and a lift may be recommended. Therefore, it would be necessary to assess your current dimensions and get a better understanding of what your goals are before determining whether breast augmentation would be suitable for you.
Dear Natalie Xerri, breast implant type and sizing selection is a complicated process and requires a detailed consultation that includes a discussion of your goals, a detailed examination, and a lengthy discussion. But the decision will always start and end with the patient. When it comes to sizing, we have all of our patients find 3 photos of their desired breast size. We ask for naked breast photos because clothing can obscure the true size (push up bras). Next, we consult with patients and go over the photos and take detailed breast measurements during a physical exam. Next, we using a sizing algorithm to determine a range of implants that will work based on the exam and the measurements.Lastly, during the operation, we use silicone sizers in the operating room to see how the size actually looks in the breast. We sit the patient up in the operating room, while asleep of course, and compare the sizer result with their desired look photos. If it is too small, we start the process over with a slightly larger implant. We don't stop until we get the perfect match.Of all of my breast augmentation patients, every one of them has been happy with their size due to this detailed and meticulous process. You don't want to invest time and money into a result that is either too big or too small. You should discuss your concerns with a board-certified plastic surgeon and make sure that your surgeon understands your goals.Daniel Barrett, MDCertified, American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
I recommend an in person consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and be measured. After I measure and discuss goals with my patients, we then look at pictures of women (my patients) with similar measurements with different size breast implants. They also get to see what they would look like when the breasts have fully dropped and fluffed and in clothes. You get to see actual results and the surgeon's experience and not a virtual idea of what can be achieved. Women tell me that this process is very helpful in determining what is right for them. The size implant best depends upon many things, especially how much actual breast tissue you have and your measurements. Without this information, no one can tell you anything. The best size for you is determined during the consultation.
It is about choosing the right dimensions that fit your breast width. Measurements and fitting the right implant will give you the best results.Make sure that you're evaluated by a specialist, who performs large volumes of breast augmentation with great lots of before and afters. Also, make sure that the physician is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
The questions you asked are where your board certified plastic surgeon comes in. She/He is the expert you need to help you select the implant that gets you closest to your surgical goals. At a consultation your desired outcomes will be discussed and the breasts will be measured. Your surgeon will combine this information with her/his expertise to help guide you to potential implants. I've included a video on implant selection I hope you find helpful.
The outcome of cosmetic surgical procedures is general variables. The first is the patient’s candidacy for the procedure in the first place and the second is how the procedure is performed. When it comes to breast augmentation surgery, we can include implant selection in the latter variable.Without seeing pictures of what your breast looked like, we can’t really begin to make an assessment or give you input on the appropriate implant choice. Understanding how your breast are positioned on the chest wall, if they have a divergence, etc. etc. I’ll help contribute to your candidacy for the procedure and all of these variables contribute to what the final appearance will look like.A sufficiently experienced plastic surgeon should be able to differentiate all of these variables, and explain the type of results possible based on your candidacy for the procedure.I suggest having multiple in person, consultations with plastic surgeons in your community before scheduling surgery.Best,Mats Hagstrom, MD
