I was diagnosed with factor v after I got a blood clot. Is it too risky to get Breast implants?

Hi TcBre,My first question is whether you are off the pill (estrogens)?  My second question would be if you have the full gene (homozygous) or just a touch of the gene (heterozygous)?  BA is a short procedure, and we do Factor V patients frequently if the "stars all align".  It is worrisome you have had a blood clot, but talk if over at length with your PS.  I would think it is possible (without knowing all the facts).  All the best, Dr. Joe

Thanks for your inquiry and an excellent question.  Having a blood clotting disorder as you are well aware of involves near continuous anticoagulation.  I am glad to hear you have minimized your risk factors.  You can have a breast augmentation, but your anticoagulation treatment needs to be modified for surgery with the help of your hematologist or primary care doctor that manages it.  Good Luck.

Most surgeons utilize a grading system to determine your risk of a blood clot after surgery. Normally if the risk is considered high enough postoperative anticoagulation is recommended. With your history most surgeons would recommend that you receive anticoagulation after your augmentation. Under these circumstances your operation would be considered safe but not risk free.

Factor V patients can have an excellent outcome after surgery. Your plastic surgeon should talk to your hematologist to optimize your care and lower risk.
