Sharp, stabbing pains after breast reduction?

I had a breast reduction 3 months ago. I still have bruising and red areas where my scars had opened up. However, recently I have been experiencing strong, sharp stabbing pains in the bottom of my breast. Is this normal? I have previously had sharp pains which I was told was nerves, however the recent pains have been much worse.

You obvioiulsy need to consult your Plastic Surgeon. It sounds like you have had some areas of wound dehiscence. It is important to ensure that these areas are not infected as you recent onset of increased pain pain could be due to infection. Unfortunately some patients do end up getting problems with sharp pain on and off. This can be due to some nerve endings being sensitve after they have been left raw following the surgery. In most cases this usually settles with time.

The sharp pains you are experiencing are usually caused by cut nerves during the procedure and are normally experienced for several months. The intensity of the pain usually decreases in time as your nerves start to heal.

It can be very normal to experience changes in sensation after breast reduction.  This applies to the sensation of pain as well.  Some patients will experience new intermittent pain as they continue to heal because the nerves are also healing and changing.  Our patients often find that applying pressure can help reduce pain, or wearing a supportive bra that reduces movement of the breasts.  This might be a good place to start.

Remember, you should follow your gynecologist's recommendation regarding regular screening as well.  Continue to obtain an annual physical exam with your OBGYN and mammograms as recommended as you would have before having surgery.
