Can my gold crown be filed without causing any further damage?

Hi...i have a 22 carrot gold crown which is slightly chipped towards the front bottom ,its not even noticeable unless you look carefully,my question is can it be filed down? ,it just feels a bit rough as compared to the rest of the crown and its looks like a tiny kind of dent ...i don't want to remove it and replace it with another crown ....What are my options to repairing it? can it be filed down and polished ? i,m just a bit conscious about it ...Please help ... thanks

Hi:It's odd that part of a gold crown is chipped.  As long as there is no cavity a filling can be placed.  Best,Dr. Maddahi

Usually gold crowns can be polished by a dentist - the only issue is the thickness of the crown at that location. Crowns tend not to be made in anything near 22 carat, as that is very very soft, but even so polishing should not be a problem. If the remaining crown material is too thin, then your tooth will show through, which will be a problem and may mean the whole crown will have to be replaced.
