Question

Hello. I'm 24 and had a lower lid surgery on the 30th of April, 2015. My first 7 days were the best so far. Even as early as the third day, I had people from within my family tell me that they can already see the results. That might have led me to become a little too eager to celebrate. After a week I had started to smoke/drink regularly and have been for the last week. Now, the swelling is back and my eyes look worse than pre-op. Have I done permanent damage or simply delayed my healing?

Some increased swelling is common after lower lid surgery. I find this is most noticeable between 3 weeks and 12 weeks after surgery. If your surgeo perfomed a fat transposition or transfer this will also increase swelling.I may recommend topical steriod, ice, and massage depending on how much time has passed since surgery.I may avoid any additional surgery within the next 6 months.Alexander Anzarut

Hi. It sounds like you have been partying too hard during your recovery. You should not smoke after facial surgery. It is very inflammatory and gets to the surgical site by both the the blood stream and the external incision. As long as you stop now and give yourself time to recover, it is likely that this will all subside without any complications. Give it a few more weeks. Ease back into things slowly to make sure your eyes can tollerate your activities. Try to take it easy and follow up with your surgeon. Best regards, Ira Vidor,M.D.

You have post operative swelling.  The alcohol and smoking are not helping your situation.  Also spring allergies may be contributing to the problem. From your photos, I don't think you have developed a significant hematoma, but it does sound as if you have been a little to active and have aggravated the swelling.  Apply cold packs to the eyelids and let your surgeon know.  They may want to check things out.  But, take it easy.  It can take 4 to 6 weeks for swelling to subside.  Best wishes, Dr Lepore.
