Is it better to keep mole removal site dry or moist?

I just got a mole removed on my face by the shave method. I had it done by a plastic surgeon. Aftercare instructions say to keep it dry and covered for a week. I've read some articles that say to keep it moist with Vaseline. Which is better?

I suggest to follow your physicians protocol for post-treatment care, as his/her protocol may vary from mine. I have my patients use a silicone based scar gel with growth factors.   Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for your question.  A very thin layer of vasaline twice daily can help with wound healing.  However, if the area is occluded (no air getting to the wound) with a bandage and if the wound bed is too wet (wrinkled appearance) it can slow the healing process.  I recommend discussing any change in care with the doctor who performed the procedure.  I wish you the best!
