Crown fell off. Can they put the crown back on (photo)

Question

My crown fell off and taste like poop. It hollow in the center but was filled with soft black and brown popcorn curnnel flake textured stuff. My insurance ran out and and won't be renewed til January.

Hello there,I'm sorry to hear that your crown came off.  Factors that may have caused your crown to come off include: the tooth under your crown fractured, the adhesive failed, there may be underlying decay. Based on your photo, it appears that you have a significant amount of decay on that tooth.  I would recommend finding a dentist in your area sooner rather than later. If the tooth underneath is not damaged and does not have recurrent decay, it is possible for the crown to be put back on.  It does sound like your tooth may have some recurrent decay, and in that case you will need an x-ray and exam to see what can be done.  I would have it looked at fairly quickly.

The image is difficult to tell exactly what is left of the tooth.  If the tooth prep is fine and undamaged then the crown could be cemented back on.  However, if the tooth broke inside the crown then it no longer has the support to hold onto that crown usually.  I would return to your dentist and find out what your options are.

A clinical exam and x ray are needed. A crown can be recemented if the tooth part is not decayed or broken. It is also important to check gum condition around the tooth. Consult with your dentist.
