Would Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis prevent me from getting saline or silicone breast implants?

I am in the Denver area and I am heavily considering breast augmentation. I also have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Does this condition prevent me from getting saline or silicone breast implants? Is fat transfer a better option?

The simple answer is YES!  I would encourage you to get full medical clearance prior to your surgery to make sure that your thyroid levels are within normal limits.  This will ensure that you undergo as optimal healing as possible following your procedure. And I agree 100% with the previous comment regarding going with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.  I would also add that it helps to choose a surgeon that specializes specifically in breast enhancement as well as revisional breast surgeries.  This expertise can make all the difference when it comes to achieving the most optimal outcome.  I would also pay close attention to your diet around the time of surgery.  The right foods can also play a huge role in how well you heal and your experience overall!I hope that helps and wish you the very best!Warmest regards,Gregory A Buford MD FACSBoard Certified Plastic Surgeon and Author

You will probably need a clearance from your doctor. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Having a history of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis does not mean you could not consider breast augmentation with either silicone gel or saline filled implants.Although there is no proven direct cause and effect link between silicone gel implants and autoimmune disorders, many doctors recommend that patients with autoimmune disorders select saline implants.Of course, it is critically important that you check with your primary care doctor to be sure your condition is stable enough before undergoing elective cosmetic surgery.
