Is the cut infected? (Photo)

Question

Hi there! I had surgery to excise my tattoo 3 weeks ago. It’s looking red around part of the cut, it’s slightly sore and itches. The stitches are still in but are being removed Saturday. I wanted to know if this is to expected 3 weeks after surgery or whether it could be infected. Any answers would be appreciated!

Thank you for your question. I cannot give you advice without knowing more information such as if the redness appeared in the last few day or has been there all along. However, if you are experiencing a lot of tenderness, warmth or fluid this can indicate an infection. I recommend having a follow up with your surgeon to address any concerns you may have. I cannot completely answer your questions without more information.  For example, if this redness appeared in just the last few days, that is more indicative of infection than if the redness has been there all along.  Itching can be normal as a wound heals.  However, if there is significant tenderness, increased warmth or drainage, all of those can indicate infection. I would follow up as soon as possible with your surgeon.
