Both the procedures have advantages and disadvantages. It seems to me that plastic surgeons seem to be more in favor of using chin implants while oral surgeons seem to be more of the school of sliding genioplasty. For those who need vertical and horizontal augmentation a sliding genioplasty may be slightly more advantageous. I suggest having several in person consultations with both oral surgeons and plastic surgeons to learn more about each procedure. Review each provider before and after pictures especially for patients with similar profiles to yourself in the before pictures. Generally speaking the disadvantage to using chin implants is the need for placing a foreign body though to some degree that’s also the case with a sliding genioplasty. More so is the concern that there will be bone erosion with time from the implant. The bone erosion happens with time but tends to be somewhat limited. The sliding genioplasty is a more involved procedure and requires the placement of metal hardware. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
