29 years old - I want to start my journey towards removing silicone injections from my body. What do I do?

Hi I am 29 years old. In 2018 I had 1000 cc of silicone injected into the sides of my but and hips in hopes of fixing my dips and looking more curvy. Of course, this was a horrible mistake and I am paying for it now with anxiety, paranoia & mild pain. There also was swelling in my leg for about a week, throughout my thigh and shin. I’m afraid it may have migrated. I would like an ultrasound and I want to start my journey towards removing this poison out of my body. Please any advice

I thank you for your question about removing silicone injections from your body. Unfortunately, you had silicone injected into your buttocks and hips, but there is hope. I believe many of your symptoms (including your anxiety, paranoia, and pain, anxiety paranoia, pain, and swelling in your leg) are indeed related to your silicone injections. The best workout would include an MRI with and without contrast of the buttock, hips, and thighs. Ultrasounds are not as accurate. Please call my office for a virtual consultation, and we can arrange for an MRI to be done in Hamden. Once an MRI has been completed, a surgical plan can be created. If silicone is in the back muscles, namely the gluteus maximus muscle, you may require an incision; otherwise, if the silicone is not in the gluteus maximus muscle. You may be able to remove the silicone with a closed or a suction technique. Please seek an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon.

I specialize in biopolymer and silicone removal and subsequent reconstruction.  Since removing biopolymer and silicone is an extensive procedure, please seek an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon with significant experience in removing silicone from the buttock.  Do your research.  Make sure they have performed at least 100 biopolymer and silicone removal surgeries and have the before and after pictures to prove it.  Carefully examine their before and after photos and check their reviews on RealSelf.   If you cannot find an experienced buttock silicone removal surgeon in your neighborhood, consider traveling out of state if you must.

Hi there and thank you for your question! I am really sorry to hear about the pain and symptoms you’re experiencing. Unfortunately, these symptoms are common amongst those who have been injected with silicone/biopolymer. Fortunately, there is hope! The first and best thing you can do is begin scheduling consultations with surgeons who are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) and specialize in this highly complex surgery. At the time of your consultation, be sure to go over your symptoms, any questions or concerns, MRI/imaging requests, as well as their technique (I perform surgical excision of the product in a two-stage surgery at my private plastic surgery practice) and review in great detail the proposed surgical plan.

Patients frequently report ongoing inflammation and chronic pain syndromes that can result in moving pains throughout the body from the legs down into the ankles and into the abdomen as well. I have several utube videos showing how I pick each piece of foreign material from the areas where they were injected. Removing good tissue with bad can leave dents which have to filled with fat transfer after you have healed from the silicone removal.

First of all, I would commend you for the strength and courage that you have to start this journey to remove silicone biopolymer from the body. Unfortunately, many patients wait too long and that is why I have focused much of my practice on biopolymer removal. You have already completed the most important part of your journey and now it takes a bit of grit to get diagnostic information to complete the process. In most cases, we start with an examination and ultrasound to delineate and map out the silicone in the buttocks and legs. Silicone can slip between tissues and i like a 4D option to map out the silicone.

I recommend surgical options for removal that can preserve the integrity of your tissue and allow you to resume your life free of pain and suffering. Our goal is to remove as much silicone as possible and this can occur with safe techniques designed to debulk silicone biopolymer.

We commonly remove/debulk silicone from the buttock area with a tiny incision between the buttocks.  this can minimize future migration, permanent skin changes, systemic issues.  Usually MRI is the better test for evaluation, however, physical exam can usually be used to determine where the silicone is as well.  Although I have seen it migrate as far as the foot, generally migration is limited to the upper thigh area (there can be some blockage of the drainage systems of the leg, however).
