Can filler be injected under the masseter muscle?

Thank you for the great question. Botox is used to slim the masseters.  Fillers are normally placed along the mandible rather than under the masseter.  This is the usual approach for facial sculpting and contouring.  Please see an expert for safe and aesthetic results.

You can inject filler through the masseter muscle and onto the angle of the mandible (jaw bone) or along it in order to provide volume or definition to this area.  This is the space that we use when we do mandibular angle implants or augmentation.  Fillers like Restylane Lyft, Voluma and Radiesse work well in this area.

Thank you for your message! Typically jaw fillers are placed upon the bone along the jawline and not injected into the muscle. Botox can be injected into the muscle to help slim the appearance of the masseter or help with the chewing/grinding sensation associated with TMJ! Hope this helps!

Filler can be injected on bone at the posterior aspect of the jawline. Care should be taken to make sure the filler is not injected into the parotid gland itself. 

Volume is usually added in the subcutaneous space superficial to the muscle, It would not normally be placed in the muscle.

depending on the expertise of the injector, the material may be placed within the masseter muscles. rather than on bone.  Also, most likely (no study done on this, purely from experience), fillers placed in this area, under or within the muscles will have a shorter duration due to the repeated physical action of the muscle.

I use a great deal of fillers to enhance the jaw line on my patients.  There are times that I use a combination of fillers and Thermage to tighten the jaw line so that the jaw has definition and rejuvenated.  If there is fat under the chin then Cool-mini or Kybella are the best options depending on the amount of fat.  Please consult an expert in cosmetic injections in this advanced area for the best cosmetic results.  Best, Dr. Green
