I have a mole on my areola, which I've had my entire life. A few months ago, I got it checked for melanoma since it began to change. The dermatologist did a punch biopsy on the flat mole, and it came back as benign. I noticed that it quickly returned to the original size after only a few months. Should I be concerned about the regrowth? My dermatologist immediately scheduled an appt. for me to see a plastic surgeon for removal of the mole and check for melanoma once again. How will this heal?

Because of the size and location of your mole, it should be removed by excising a simple ellipse of skin. I then use a "layer closure" using both dissolving and non-dissolving sutures to give the best cosmetic result. The area then typically heals with a linear scar that is significantly less...
I would recommend that you call the office to obtain a status report on your biopsy and the next phase of treatment of your mole. Raffy Karamanoukian MD FACSLos Angeles
