Iron-deficiency anemia, Taking Iron pills & Blood builders at same time. Or should I just take one over the other?

Chronic Anemia is multifactorial, and if you have been under the Hematologist evaluation and determine you do not have any medical condition which is causing the anemia besides the genetical issue, then iron and blood builders all together are OK. Just be sure you have iron 1 hour separated from meals, and use fresh orange juice to improve absorption.We have been doing something that have helped a lot our anemic patients: auto-transfusion. That means, 3-4 weeks prior your surgery, you attend the Blood bank and then they will test and hold your blood until the day of your surgery. During surgery the anesthesiologist does a hemodilution, which is using about 10-20% more of the regular IV fluids through the surgery, this will help to make your blood thinner and during the procedure you will naturally lose thinner blood and 8 hours after the surgery your own blood is "auto-transfunded". In order to do this procedure your hemoglobin levels have to be over 11 gr.We've been doing this procedure very safely and with great results as are: better recovery, better healing, etc.Hopefully this may help.Dr. Cardenas

Good medical practice would dictate that you follow-up with your primary care physician or internist for  evaluation; he/she will be able to determine the cause of any anemia ( if present) and recommend treatment based on diagnosis.
