Hello Plastic Surgery Gods and Godesses! I just came down with a runny nose, headache and watery eyes. No fever, sore throat or coughing. My mommy makeover is in 9 days. How do you determine whether or not to reschedule due to illness? Thanks!
Answer: Your body needs to be healthy for optimal healing Hi there,The healthier you are before surgery, the more prepared your body will be for optimal healing. To ensure minimizing post-op swelling and bruising and improve wound healing and limit scar appearance, it is best to go into your procedure with an enhanced immune system. The stress of surgery creates many physiological changes, requiring extra energy and nutritional stores for the body to heal itself. Let your surgeon know of your illness and he/she will be able to give you the proper instructions on how to proceed. Get well soon!Hope this helps.Nick Slenkovich MD, FACS

Answer: Will a headache, infection and runny nose affect my mommy makeover surgery timing? The key to being ready for an elective surgery like a mommy makeover, is that you are very healthy. In my practice, that means you have a healthy lifestyle with healthy nutrition and exercise and that your body is free of any infection from bacteria or viruses. It is critical that you are evaluated by your general doctor (internist, family practitioner) prior to an elective surgery like a mommy makeover if you have signs or symptoms of an infection so that it is postponed if you have any signs of infection or a decreased capacity to heal uneventfully. Good Luck

Answer: You have to be completely healthy! Any "infection" has to be resolved before surgery, especially when general anesthesia is required. Any fevers, coughing especially need to be resolved. Runny nose and watery eyes may be allergies and should not lead to cancellation of your procedure. Ultimately the surgeon and anesthesiologist will make the determination whether to proceed. 9 days should be enough for your situation to resolve. Make sure if you take any medications to check with your surgeon before you do. Certain medications may increase risk of bleeding or other complications.

Answer: Respiratory infection and surgery If your symptoms get progressively worse, then I would consider waiting until things resolve before having surgery. I would also notify your plastic surgeon's office and discuss this in advance and have a contingency plan in terms of rescheduling now to be safe or waiting until your surgical date comes closer. Ideally, you want to be at your best before surgery because it is a big procedure and your body need to be healthy to heal.

Answer: Patients should be healthy going into a mommy makeover. If you are recovering from a cold it's not necessary to cancel the procedure. An emerging virus would cause the operation to be postponed. All of this will be the decision of your own surgeon and anesthesiologist.
