Hello! I'm researching implants and came across cohesive gel implants (Mentor). I am getting a bit confused with all the different terminology (i.e gummy bear, cohesive, textured,etc.). Is the Mentor cohesive gel/ Mentor memory gel a textured implant, or is it offered both as a smooth or textured implant depending on preference?

Answer: Cohesive gel and texturing With all the marketing by the companies and made up names it gets very confusing (for the docs too).Implants come in different shellsTextured or smooth. Some of the textured implants were recalled (taken off the market) last year because of risks of ALCL - a rare cancer. Most US surgeons only use smooth implants at this time.implants come in different fill materialSaline (salt water) or silicone. All modern latest generation silicone implants are highly cohesive (ie gummy bear). Older implants had less cohesive silicone. Some manufacturers make different grades of cohesiveness which make the implants firmer and stand up higher - good for some situations like rippling etc.implants come in different shapesRound or shaped (teardrop). Some of the shaped implants were taken off the market as shaped implants need to be textured so they dont shift. Round implants come in different degrees of projection vs width - ( high vs moderate vs low profile or whatever marketing term the manufacturer uses - allergan calls them moderate vs full etc)so in answer to your question - mentor memory gel are cohesive and come in both textured or smooth.

Answer: Surface All the manufacturers make both smooth and textured surfaces implants with varying degrees of cohesive gel so your confusion is totally understandable. Allergan’s textured implants though have been removed from the market due to the association of ALCL with them, a form of cancerDr Corbin
