Botox during pregnancy - what is the risk of adverse outcomes?

Hello... I was wondering what physicians’ thoughts and practices are around Botox (miniscule dosages) during pregnancy. I know it’s a Category C drug but recent studies also seem to show no adverse outcomes. Thanks in advance for your input.

Hello @dcgirl44236, thank you for your question. Botox reduces wrinkles and expression lines on the skin, among other things. To apply it, certain factors must be considered, and one of the most important is pregnancy. In pregnancy, you should not take any medication that is not prescribed by your doctor to treat any symptoms measuring the consequences for the fetus. Like many drugs, Botox had not been studied in pregnant women, so it is unknown if there would be any possible adverse events.  I would say that it is unlikely that there would be any adverse events, but it is recommended to avoid any unnecessary medications or treatments during pregnancy and breast feeding, just to be on the safe side.

Hi, thank you for your question! I do not recommend receiving botox while pregnant. There is not enough data/studies out there to determine if this will harm the pregnancy.

Hi and thank you for your question. We do not advise botox during pregnancy. As some side effects have happened, there is not enough studies to know the full effects. It is advised to stay away until after pregnancy and breast feeding is done.

There is a lack of studies that prove that it is safe for women to have Botox injections while pregnant and that there are no untoward effects on the baby.  It is recommended that you wait until you have had the baby and completed breastfeeding before having Botox injections.

hello! This is a frequently asked question but unfortunately there isn't resounding data to support the safety of neurotoxin injections among pregnant women. With that being said, I would not recommend it during pregnancy. Should sufficient data arise that supports the use of neurotoxin in pregnant women then it could be reconsidered but at this time it isn't something I would personally suggest.
