Do I have stitches sticking out after otoplasty? 5 months post op.

Question

I'm about 5 months post Otoplasty and it appears that I have a white stitch that is sticking out of my left ear, (circled in red). It isn't painful or irritated but I have been applying vaseline on it just as a method to prevent irritation. Is this something that I should be concerned about, and should I see a surgeon to fix it, or can I just ignore it and it will heal over on its own? Thank you.

Unfortunately, I was unable to see any photos. However, if you do have a spitting stitch, it’s best to return to your surgeon so they can resolve the situation. They’ll most likely just remove or trim it. It’s a good idea to get this addressed earlier than later, to minimize the risk of infection.

This problem occasionally happens, particularly when permanent sutures are used.  Removal of the suture, if done after 3-6 months,  will not affect your result.

I do not see a photograph attached with your question.  I would recommend seeing your otoplasty surgeon to determine if there might be a suture sticking out on your left ear.  This is something that could be easily corrected if it is a suture.

It is very possible that a stitch has worked it's way through the skin.  Permanent sutures are frequently used for otoplasty surgery and, while rare, this is a known complication.  There is no emergency but you should have your surgeon take a look to remove the stitch if necessary. Likely, the scar tissue will maintain your result even if the suture is removed.

It is possible that a stitch knot or end has worked its way to the surface.  This can usually be removed or trimmed easily by your surgeon so be sure to get in touch with them and have an assessment.Best of Luck, Dr. K.
