I wore sunglasses after Rhinoplasty. How can I fix the indents?

Question

The nurse told me it was o.k. to wear sunglassss when I went to my follow up appointment 5 days post op. Perhaps this was fine while I had my nose splint on, however, I wore sunglasses for a good 2 hours a day after my splint was removed and it left indents. It's been a few hours and I'm getting a little nervous. From what I've read I should not have worn them. What can I do if anything to correct the indents? Have I done permanent damage?

If it has only been two hours when you posted this, I would not be concerned as the apparent indentations will likely resolve. If it has been days or weeks, I would speak to your surgeon. You could try a synthetic filler such as Restylane for any depressions. Hope that helps. Best,Dr. Donath

I would recommend contacting your surgeon to discuss wearing glasses (or sunglasses) after your rhinoplasty.  Your particular surgeon may have different instructions for patients than other surgeons.  My particular preference is to not have patients wear any sort of glasses for about 6 weeks after rhinoplasty.  If glasses are needed, they can be taped up to the forehead so that they do not rest on top of the nose.  In your particular instance, I would recommend that you stop wearing the glasses.  The indents should improve over time.

There is a general caution that glasses and sunglasses can be a problem after rhinoplasty until the nose has healed sufficiently. In our practice avoiding pressure for four weeks should do, and those that need glasses will have to  use tape to support the glasses off the bridge to avoid dents or displacement. Right now the best thing is to see your surgeon and keep the sungalsses off.
