Every doctor is different in their requirements. In my practice, I require the patient to absolutely avoid aspirin, nsaid's, Vitamin E, fish oil or ANY medication that impedes blood clotting or thins the blood for 3 week before and 3 weeks after surgery. If a patient takes any thing that effects clotting during this period, their surgery would be cancelled. We discuss the importance of this in detail with all our patient at the time of scheduling. This is important so,contact your surgeon to discuss this ASAP.
In our practice, we ask patients to avoid aspirin for two weeks prior to nasal surgery to prevent a nosebleed. Always best to check with your surgeon.
Any aspirin can cause platelets not to function normally. We usually recommend patients be off any ASA/aspirin or other blood thinners for at least 2 weeks prior to surgery. Aspirin is commonly found in many over the counter products so it is important to read ingredients of any medicines carefully. For most patients with no contraindications Tylenol or acetaminophen is a good alternative closer to surgery. Your surgeon will likely provide a list of medicines and herbal treatments to avoid.
Dear Becca, During the preoperative appointment we go through a list of medications, vitamins and herbs that must be stopped three weeks prior to surgery. Aspirin is one of the OTC medications that must be stopped as it leads to excess bleeding during and after the procedure. Patients who have a history of headaches or migraines have a special appointment with the anesthesiologist to direct them of medications that are safe. In other patients we always provide plain tylenol tablets to them in their surgical "Goody Bags." Speak with your surgeons office for their protocol. Best regards, Michael V. Elam, M.D.
