Will laser resurfacing cause my ocular shingles to reoccur? (Photo)

Question

I had shingles around my left eye app 2 years ago. Would it be too risky to have laser resurfacing of my face? I also had terrible acne as a teen. I also have cardiac arrhythmia, controlled with meds. If laser would be too risky, what would be my next best option to help me with the red ruddiness of my complexion? I am 69 years old, otherwise in good health.

If you have a history of shingles around the eye,  a recurrence is certainly possible after laser resurfacing of the face, so I would not recommend that laser procedure.  It is also possible, though much less likely, to have a recurrent shingles outbreak after non-ablative laser procedures such as BBL.  This may be a better option, but if you decide to have BBL for your facial redness I would suggest speaking with your physician about going on antiviral medication prior to your treatment to help reduce the risk of a shingles recurrence.

Thank you for your question and picture! Unfortunately, its impossible to tell what may or may not trigger a shingles outbreak, although the chances of a recurrence is very low with laser resurfacing, it may not be the best option. Topical treatments, chemical peels or micro needling may help before jumping to such an intense treatment. There are topical prescriptions that can help with the redness from rosacea if that is what you are concerned with as well. I recommend consulting with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your concerns in person and come up with a safe and effective treatment plan for you.
