The FDA approved dose of finasteride for male patients 18-65 with male pattern hair loss is 1 mg daily. Side effects exist and it is very important to speak with your physician as well as your pharmacist about all possible side effects. Changes in sperm count have been studied for years. Early studies suggested minimal to no changes. Recent studies suggest that a reduction in sperm count is possible for a proportion of men using finasteride.  Men using finasteride who are unable to father a child after 6 months should speak to their physician about whether stopping finsteride would improve fertility.
