IPL .....side effect or allergic reaction?

Question

I had IPL yesterday. I had some reddness that expected, but I also have lumpiness on my cheeks, almost looks like cystic acne? Mainly on the apples of my cheeks, although my cheekbones seen to have light lines going upward ? I sent a pic to the esthetician who check with the doc. He thought it was an allergic reaction and advised benedryl....I not sure I'm buying that and I am concerned...any thoughts ....advise....please ....thank you!

Your reaction is most likely related to the IPL treatment. IPL will heat up the browns and reds in the skin, and this will sometimes create small areas of inflammation that can look like little bumps. I agree with the use of an antihistamine. I personally prefer to see any patient who is experiencing an unusual reaction personally. If there is swelling oral Bromelain,pineapple enzyme, two capsules three times a day can be very useful in decreasing swelling within one to two days.

Please post a photo, so we can better respond to your question.  In my practice, I do see some patients who have a profound swelling and redness for a few days after IPL.  For those, I tend to use antihistamines (like benadryl) and perhaps a steroid dose-pack for the most severe reactions.  They always resolve.Warmly,Dr. Kavali
