I had a mole removed from my face. The plastic surgeon used silver nitrate in the wound. Will this discoloration stay? (photo)

Hello Kellymae, silver nitrate is often used to stop any bleeding and chemically cauterize the edges of a wound.  This can give a dark black color to the wound.  This is temporary and will slough or fade away.  Without examining you, physically feeling the tissue, assessing your desired outcome, taking a full medical history, and discussing the pros and cons of any treatments it is difficult to be comprehensive.I would clarify with your doctor, because your thought about keeping the moist wound is correct.  It has been shown that moist wounds heal faster than dry scabbed wounds. A typical regimen for my patients is cleaning the wound with dilute hydrogen peroxide to remove any crust, following by application of petrolatum or bacitracin ointment, repeat 4 x daily. I am unsure how the mole was removed, but if no sutures were used to close it than this may take 2 weeks to heal which is typical. I hope this helps. Dr. Shadfar
