Dental work after mommy makeover

Question

Timing seems to be the worst for me. My surgery is in 3 days and my crown just broke, so did the tooth underneath. I'm sure going to need an extraction of the tooth and am going to need a bridge. How long after surgery should I get this taken care of? I met with the patient care coordinator but my doctor is out in Canada and she said that major dental work should be scheduled 6 months later! I don't know if an extraction is considered major... I don't want to be nearly toothless for 6 months. Help.

I am so sorry to hear that. If you are planning to undergo breast augmentation, be sure to take any antibiotics prescribed by your dentist vigilantly to avoid infection. If you choose to receive dental work first, I would recommend postponing your mommy makeover a few weeks. Best of luck!Dr. JSB

No reason not to go ahead and have your crown fixed. Let your surgeon know what you are doing but there should be no jeopardy to the procedure.

Dear madam,    Sorry about your misfortune. If you are in pain, I would recommend to postpone your mommy make over surgery and take care of your tooth, even in a temporary fashion, so you will not be in pain. The permanent restoration of your tooth can be done at a later date which can be done , once you feel comfortable with your recovery from the mommy make over. We must all be at the same meeting!  I would think that by 2 weeks after surgery (assuming you heal well) you could have dental work. Talk to your surgeon but if you getting breast implants I would have you take prophylactic antibiotics before your dental work. Best of luck to you.

I'm in Montreal at the same meeting presenting innovations in aesthetic surgery. What a small world. You can have the dental work whenever you feel up to it. I would think a couple weeks would be adequate.

I am sorry to hear about your misfortune.  If indeed the tooth is not salvageable, I would get it extracted prior to your mommy make over.  That would insure your are confortable and free of potential infection.Then proceed with your plastic surgery.  If you decide to have a bridge fabricated or to get a dental implant  soon after your surgery and you underwent breast implant placement, I surely would recommend prophylactic antibiotic.Good luck.
