Hello Doctors, I will be getting a mommy makeover, and I am trying to prepare myself. Reading through this website I came across ladies talking about compression socks? Is this necessary? And where can I purchase them? And, how will this help with my recovery? Thank you

Hello,Thank you for your question. Depending on age, health history and length of time in surgery, blood clots can be a concern.I provide compression stockings worn during surgery and kept on for a few days at home. Compression massage of the legs during surgery is also utilised.Talk to your Plastic Surgeon about your risk factors for clots. They will likely provide the compression you need.All the best

I appreciate your question as it is very important.As someone who sits on the american society of plastic surgeons patient safety committee it is very important to understand about blood clots.I have patients wear compression stockings (which we give you) for 1 week after surgery and have you walking the same day. Dear Sunshine1154Compression socks are worn to help decrease the risk of Deep vein thrombosis. Depending on your individual risk factors, they might be worth while. Your surgeon can help you assess your individual risks. They can be purchased at your local pharmacy, CVS,... or just simply online.

Compression socks are sometimes advised to help with blood clot prevention.  To keep your risk low from developing blood clots you should be getting out of bed and moving around several times a day starting the day after surgery. However your surgeon will let you know what is recommended based on your history and her/his preferences.  You can often buy compression socks if needed online or in local drug stores.

Compression garments (socks or hose) help to prevent blood clots in the legs which are one of the biggest risks in having surgery. Many Plastic Surgeons, including myself, recommend that you wear compression garments at least fro the first few days after your surgery. Once you are up and around, back to you normal routine, compression garments are not necessary. These garments can be purchased at most medical supply stores. I would call around.
