What are the effects of chin Botox when used long-term?

I'm looking to get botox to eliminate the "pebbly" appearance of my chin. My only concern is the long term effect of Botox use on the mentalis muscle. If the muscle atrophies over time with disuse, will that cause any physical changes in my chin - making it look droopy or anything of that sort?

Hi,Thank you for your question.Botox is a good option to relax the chin muscle and reduce the "cobblestone" or "pebbly" appearance without significant long-term side effects. The mentalis muscle is not very bulky and atrophy of this muscle likely will not result in significant changes in chin contour at rest. Additionally, you can always discontinue your Botox treatments and the muscle activity will return.Hope this helps!

Hi there, The mentalis muscle is not a large bulky muscle, and therefore Botox should not atrophy the muscle to the point where the contour or profile of tour face is noticeably changed. The good thing about Botox is that it is not permanent- once the treatment wears off (3-4months on average), the muscle will work to its full potential and bulk up again.

Botox can be used in the chin long-term without negative side effects. It will take 1-2 weeks for final results and they will resolve in 3-4 months. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist. Best, Dr. Emer

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  There would not be any long-term effects with Botox use, only the muscle atrophy you describe.  If you did not like the look, once botox wears off your muscle would return to its same size as before your treatment.  Hope this helps.

When injected properly, there should be no long term side effects when injecting Botox into your chin.  While not FDA approved for use in the chin, Botox can effectively treat this “pebbly” appearance.  Just make sure you research your provider beforehand to ensure the best results.

There shouldn't be any long term complications from using Botox in the chin/mentalis area. Over time, the muscle will weaken enough to the point you need less and less Botox. It is a great, easy treatment to treat the "walnut" chin.

I use a combination of filler and botox to address a pebbly chin appearance. The muscle atrophy is minimal and temporary and will not cause for any significant changes in the appearance of the chin or the overlying skin beyond normal aging even if you maintain the injections indefinitely. Injecting any neuromodulator like Botox, Dysport, Xeomin or etc... is a great treatment choice for pebbly chin. It gives patients a great and predictable outcome. There is no worry about your muscle atrophying in a negative way that would cause your tissue to become droopy or saggy. Repeated injections will either be spaced out further as your results start to last longer due to muscle inactivity, or we can keep your visits closer together and just use less medicine to achieve the same results.
