I had a BL and BA 3 weeks ago. My doctor recommends that I wear an underwire bra for 4 weeks. I have 100% confidence in my doctor, however I’d like to hear other doctors opinions on wearing or not wearing an underwire post op. Based on research, most doctors urge against underwire. Just wondering why. Thanks!

Answer: Underwire bra after breast surgery I would typically recommend against an underwire bra for a few weeks after surgery, mostly out of concern for the underwire rubbing on the incisions and surgical area of the breast. My patients wear a soft but supportive bra, and that has worked well for me. But if your surgeon has had good results with underwire, and if it hasn't bothered you for the 3 weeks so far, I would stay stick with what they recommend! Most of us are biased toward the post-op protocols that we were taught in training, or have found through trial and error a plan that works for our particular surgical techniques (and it may not be the same for everyone). Best of luck with your continued post-op recovery!
