Will I regain pigmentation in my areola and nipples? (photos)

Good question. Without examining you it is difficult to predict however it seems that you have suffered some superficial necrosis of the areola. It is a bit early to know exactly what will happen but it is likely that there will be some pigmentary difference between the portion that sloughed off and the rest of the areola. It may be lighter or darker than the rest, and it is possible that the difference will not be noticeable. It would be advisable to see your plastic surgeon for a proper examination to get their opinion. Best of luck.

Four to five pounds is a major reduction and I imagine this has made a wonderful change in your life! Epidermolysis, or shedding of the outermost layer of the skin where the pigment resides is quite common after large reductions such as yours. Usually the pigment returns over a period of months. Be patient

If re pigmentation does not occur after 9 months than consider a expert tattoo artist to color match for you... 

Darker skinned people have a slightly higher risk of loosing some pigment. In some cases this will return so time is your friend. I would allow at least six months to let your body heal. Some hypopigmentation can develop in patients.  This often improves with time as things heal. Best to give it 6 months to a year. Follow closely with your surgeon.

Thanks for your question-- I'm sorry to hear you are having to deal with this after your surgery.  Stay in close followup with your plastic surgeon, since he or she will best understand your operative/postoperative course and what may have caused this.  Sometimes the superficial part of the nipple can slough and the new skin is hypopigmented.  Your surgeon may be able to examine you and advise whether the pigmentation is likely to return to normal.  Another option, after 6-9 months, would be to tattoo this area to match the remainder of the areola.  Discuss these concerns with your plastic surgeon.  Best wishes for a smooth recovery!--Erik Hoy, M.D.

Thank you for your question. It is very early after your procedure to tell what the final outcome will be. You will just have to monitor it as you heal.  Make sure your surgeon is aware of the situation and follow those recommendations.  Good Luck
