I have 36 DD breasts. They hurt my back and I find it uncomfortable having such large breasts. I am 14 and my mom said she was going to look into me having a reduction. Am I able to get a reduction at my age? It is very hard finding bras and swimsuits and I would maybe like to go down to a B in case they grow. My breasts haven't grown for a while though.
Answer: Breast Reduction at Age of 14?
Thank you for the question.
I would agree with the other respondents, that 14 is generally too young for breast reduction surgery; it is however not too young to educate yourself about the options available. Remember that there is a definite “body image adjustment” that happens as you go through puberty. I hope you can express your concerns with your parents; seek counseling if necessary.
It is possible that you are dealing with juvenile breast hypertrophy along with the physical and psychosocial consequences of this diagnosis. In other words, the breasts are too large for the frame causing both physical and psychological distress.
As you think about breast reduction surgery make sure you do your homework and understand the potential risks and complications associated with the procedure. Unsatisfactory scarring is one of the potential complications. Make sure you also understands that further surgery may be necessary in the future (for example if the breasts were to grow in size again).
On the other hand, breast reduction surgery is one of the most patient pleasing operations we perform and I think that for the right teenager (enough symptoms) it may be an excellent option (regardless of the age).
Sometimes breast reduction surgery is covered through health insurance. The best way to obtain insurance coverage for breast reduction surgery involves some “hoops” to jump through. The more documentation you have (for example, from your primary care doctor, physical therapist, chiropractor etc.) the better when it comes to obtaining insurance “authorization” for the procedure.
This documentation and letter/pictures from your plastic surgeon will help you obtain authorization.
When the time is right, seek consultation with well-trained/experienced board-certified plastic surgeon.
I hope this helps.

Answer: Is 14 Too Early For A Breast Reduction
For most women/girls, their breast development is not complete by age 14. This means that proceeding with any surgical procedure on the breasts at the age of 14 is not recommended for most patients. Also, as noted earlier, most insurance policies will not cover the costs for a breast reduction until the patient is 18 years of age or older. There are exceptions to this rule but they are few and far between.
The recommendation is conservative management with well fitted bras and swimsuits. If you can, go get custom-fitted for your bra. It is a bit more expensive but it is worth it. Also keep your weight near your ideal or normal weight for your height and age. Best of luck.

Answer: 14 might be too young for breast reduction
We understand your frustration, however breast reduction at age 14 might be too soon for where you are on the growth curve. In the mean time a lean body, and physical activity can slow further breast development. A better time to consider reduction is age 18, your summer just before college.

Answer: Breast reduction at 14 Unfortunately, the minimum age requirement now imposed by insurers is 18 and they generally mandate proof of conservative medical management as well. You haven't provided a weight so, if overweight, I encourage you to seek out a weight loss program. It is best to wait until you have reached full maturation. In the meantime, I recommend that you seek physical therapy if you have back pain. Good luck!
